Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study is to determine the laterality of incidence of ovarian cystic teratoma.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed medical records, laboratory data, and radiologic results of 56 patients who
underwent ovarian cystectomy and/or oophorectomy for ovarian mass and were diagnosed as mature cystic teratoma
from March 2010 to September 2011.
Results: A total of 56 cases of mature cystic teratoma were included. Thirty one cases (55.4%) of mature cystic
teratomas were located on the right ovary, 15 cases (26.8%) were found on the left ovary, and the remaining 10
cases (17.9%) were found on both ovaries. Right-sided ovarian cystic teratomas were more frequently affected in
cases of ovarian torsion than left-sided ones (9.8% vs 0.0%; P=0.046). Among 10 patients with bilateral ovarian
teratomas, the mean two dimensional size of right-sided ovarian teratomas (44.29¡¾16.00 cm2) was bigger than that
of left-sided ones (16.87¡¾5.65 cm2).
Conclusion: Incidence of unilateral ovarian cystic teratomas may occur more often on the right side.
